Now I know that title got everyone's attention. We're covering this important topic because it's come up twice recently from two different perspectives. The first was a telephone call from a (gainfully employed) individual that wanted to know (quickly) what the "going rate" was for a "Purchasing Manager," in order to go into their upcoming salary review meeting 'prepared;' and the second was from an unemployed candidate that (almost) lost out on a sizeable offer, because she was caught 'unprepared.'

First, you cannot simply say a Purchasing Manager (or any Supply Chain related job for that matter); is worth "x" dollars. I know, I know, we've all read the "Salary Surveys" put out by the various governmental departments and supply chain organizations; but you must keep in mind, you're usually reading "median" salary levels based on a limited ("but representative") survey of "x" number of individuals across the country, who have taken the time to complete the survey.

I've seen people take copies of these surveys and march them right into their Bosses... usually with not very good results.
